Donald Trump’s newest warning to impose an additional complete levy on items imported from China has been called a “classic case” of US double standards, per the Beijing administration.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry additionally remarked that Beijing could enact its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the US President carries out his pledge, emphasizing that the country was “fearless” of a possible trade conflict.

This past Friday, Donald Trump retaliated at the Chinese government’s action to tighten its rules for overseas sales of rare earth minerals, accusing the Chinese leadership of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the international market “under its control”.

Furthermore, he vowed to pull out of a scheduled talks with China’s President Xi, which was expected to take place during a meeting in the Republic of Korea later this month.

His statements on last Friday shook financial markets, with the S&P 500 closing down nearly three percent, marking its steepest fall since last spring.

His comments renewed concerns of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

In May, the respective governments had consented to drop high import duties on each other’s products, which had raised the prospect of commerce ceasing between the two nations.

Consequently, American import duties on products from China facing an extra 30% levy compared with the year’s onset, while US goods entering the Chinese market are subject to a import levy.

Beijing’s recent statements – published by the Commerce Ministry in the manner of formal replies to media inquiries – mirrored terminology from the height of the recent trade conflict.

They criticised United States controls on semiconductors and chips while defending the country’s own export controls on rare earth minerals as “standard procedures” to ensure state interests and that of all nations.

The official remarked that for “a long time”, the United States had “broadened the definition” of domestic safety, exploited overseas sale restrictions and “adopted discriminatory practices against Beijing.

“Turning to” trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to interact with Beijing,” the official commented.

“Beijing’s stance” on a import duty dispute has remained consistent: we wish to avoid one, but we are not afraid of one.”

Last week, China declared it was reinforcing foreign shipment restrictions on rare earth minerals and additional substances vital for high-technology production.

This move was regarded as a important measure, as the state refines about the vast majority of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in products such as renewable energy components and handheld devices.

Latest statements from both governments are being viewed by observers as a strategy of bolstering negotiating stances in preparation for forthcoming discussions.
