British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
