New Year Partygoers Advised to Bundle Up with Snowfall Forecast Throughout the UK

Weather experts are reporting an icy start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. Readings are forecast to be chilly, meaning extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

As we enter Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

  • Transport is likely to be impacted.
  • The public have been urged to leave additional time for trips on the road.
  • Delays and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Alerts Released

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this indicated the weather could to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
