Underwhelming The Software Giant's Results Erase Over $70bn Off Market Value, Stoking Artificial Intelligence Hype Anxiety.

Oracle's disappointing financial performance have slashed over $70bn from the value of the software and data company co-founded by Trump ally Larry Ellison, adding to escalating concerns of a speculative bubble in AI-related stocks.

Steep Share Price Decline Follows Revenue Miss

Shares in the company fell sharply by over 11 percent overnight after it posted a weaker-than-anticipated 14% increase in sales to $16bn in the latest quarter, as it simultaneously announced plans to increase its AI spending by about $fifteen billion dollars.

The business recorded weaker-than-expected three-month sales for the period ending in November, with revenue growth at its core cloud computing business expanding at a slower pace than anticipated, at 34 percent.

Investor Concerns Over Spending and Leverage

Shareholders were further let down by a more moderate 68 percent increase in revenues from its infrastructure business.

Concurrently, the market were unnerved by the company's increased projections for spending on artificial intelligence. It now anticipates capex to leap by 40 percent to $fifty billion dollars, with the lion's share of the additional spending aimed at constructing server farms.

This substantial spending plan is set against a growing debt pile, with Oracle's long-term debt having surged by 25 percent over the last twelve months to reach $99.9 billion.

"Frankly, the report was not catastrophic, but it served to confirm fears around heavy AI spending, financed by debt, with an uncertain timeframe for profitability," commented a senior analyst.

Broader Sector Repercussions and Ecosystem Risks

Continued excitement about the potential of AI tech has led to a sharp rise in company valuations in the past year, but there has been a growing spate of cautions from policymakers and business leaders who warn equity prices could plummet if the market become disappointed by the progress or adoption of AI solutions.

While Oracle has become an important tech player creating software for major corporations worldwide and has more recently grown rapidly in cloud computing, there are increasing questions about how reliant companies are growing on each other’s financing within the AI ecosystem.

Oracle reported that its metric of contractual revenue rose by 440 percent over the past year. However, market watchers were wary when it was revealed that these commitments were propelled by large deals from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"While these are two solid customers, it will not soothe fears that big tech's AI investments are interdependent, which makes the sector vulnerable to a loss of investor confidence," observed a research director.

"Overall, strong backlog increase was not enough to alleviate anxiety about AI and the enormous amount of capital expenditure required by firms to construct AI capacity."

Broader Sell-Off in AI-Related Stocks

Other technology stocks also declined in extended trading following the Oracle report. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Stock declined by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Shares dropped by 0.3 percent.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the investment firm's shares plunged by 7.7% on Thursday.
